GM Continues Sales Leadership in Canada to Start 2026, Powered by Trucks, SUVs and Growing EV Demand
General Motors has once again secured its position as Canada’s top-selling automaker in the first quarter of 2026, with combined deliveries from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac reaching 64,302 units. The company captured 15.5 percent of the national market, while continuing to lead the industry in full-size pickup truck sales.
According to Shane Peever, GM’s ongoing success reflects strong alignment with Canadian drivers’ needs. Demand remains high for capable trucks and SUVs, while the company’s expanding electric vehicle lineup continues to gain traction. He emphasized that offering both gas-powered and electric options, supported by modern safety and connectivity technologies, is helping GM build trust with customers across the country.
Electric vehicle growth continues upward
GM’s electric vehicle portfolio showed notable year-over-year growth, with sales increasing 13.1 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025. Several key models contributed to that momentum, including the Cadillac OPTIQ EV, which saw a significant rise of 102.4 percent, along with gains from the Chevrolet Equinox EV at 29.6 percent and the GMC Sierra EV at 11.4 percent.
Building on its position as Canada’s EV sales leader in 2025, GM is also bringing back the Chevrolet Bolt. Together with the Equinox EV, the brand now offers two more accessible electric options for Canadian drivers, both delivering an estimated driving range of over 400 kilometres.
Strong performance across key segments
Beyond EV growth, GM maintained its dominance in several major vehicle categories. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra once again led the country in full-size pickup sales.
In the SUV segment, the Chevrolet Suburban topped full-size SUV sales with a 33.5 percent increase. The Chevrolet Traverse led its category with a 20.9 percent gain, while the Chevrolet Trax continued its strong performance in the small SUV segment, rising 8.6 percent year over year.
With continued strength across trucks, SUVs, and electric vehicles, GM’s first-quarter performance highlights a balanced lineup that aligns closely with evolving Canadian preferences.
